There are a number of chests scattered about Magalan. Some are unlocked. Some are locked and can only be opened with a key. Others have tumbler-style locks which require you to have picklocks and to play a mini-game and finally, some have electronic locks which require a combination which can either be found nearby, or hacked.

Unlocked chests

These can look like any other kind of chest, but require no special skills, combinations or keys to open. They almost always contain only junk.

Locations

  • One by the ramparts, past the ballistas, next to Eldur's hut in Goliet
  • One in Jax's quarter at the camp in Origin
  • One at the lean-to north of the Small Farm teleporter

Keyed chests

Keyed chests can only be opened with the correct key. They cannot be hacked or otherwise broken into.

Locations

  • Born's hut in Goliet
  • Sinda's hut in Goliet
  • Drog's chest inside the guard tower at the southern gate to Goliet
  • Vendor campsite just outside the Domed City
  • Claws' hideout in the sewers beneath the Domed City
    • Job Trunk
    • Darius's Chest
    • Grisu's Chest
    • Hector's Chest
    • Katta's Chest
    • Rat's Chest
    • Xander's Chest
    • Yasma's Chest

Tumbler-style locks

Chests with this style of lock have a pair of statistics floating above them in the HUD. The leftmost statistic is your skill level and the rightmost is the necessary skill level to open the chest. For example, seeing 1/0 above a chest would mean that the chest requires no special skill to open and that you currently have skill level 1, so you are able to open it. Seeing 2/3 would mean that you have no chance of opening the chest as your skill level is too low.

There are four levels for the chests:

  • Level 0 – these generally have a four-piston lock and usually (but not always) contain junk items
  • Level 1 – these generally have a six-piston lock and usually (but not always) contain junk items
  • Level 2 – these generally have a eight-piston lock and usually (but not always) contain junk items, though occasionally they have better contents
  • Level 3 – these generally have a ten-piston lock and often (though not always!) contain valuable items
